Foul Weather Plays a Roll in 1st
Due Structure Fire
At approximately
20:15 hrs. on January 10,
2009 Station 63 along with Station 9
(Factoryville) and Station 36 (Scott Twp.) were dispatched to a chimney fire
on Marshbrook Road in Benton Township. Heavy snow and treacherous road
conditions hampered the response of the fire companies. While in route,
Chief 63-A (Walton Jr.) requested Ladder 5 (Dalton). Chief 63-A (Walton,
Jr.) arrived on scene reporting smoke showing from both ends of the
structure and established command. Upon investigation command reported a
working structure fire with fire in the living room and heavy fire in the
attic.
Due to conditions
Chief 63 (Saxton) requested T-24 (Greenfield) and Nicholson Tanker 4. An
aggressive interior attack was made by crews from 63 and 36 stopping further
spread of the fire. Water supply was established with several of the
tankers.
Due to the size of
the fire, extensive overhaul was required to expose and extinguish hot
spots. While crews preformed overhaul and ventilation tasks other
responders placed salvage tarps over furniture in the home.
An outstanding
effort from all companies prevented a complete loss of the structure. Units
operated on scene for approximately 3 hours.
A special thanks to
crews from Dalton Fire Co. and Scott Hose Co. for leaving their annual
installation banquets.
