About Us

Our History

FLEETVILLE – The president of the Fleetville Volunteer Fire Company will help honor the company’s history, dating back to the 1940s.

Rocco Valvano, Fleetville, has served as a volunteer with the company since 2001. With the help of Jennings Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Clarks Summit, he recently put the finishing touches on a firefighter’s memorial on the company grounds just off Route 407 near Fleetville Corners.

“The monument was designed by artist Katie Wierzbicki. Valvano has worked as a mason for 11 years and opened R. Valvano Masonry, LLC, last year.

The monument includes three separate stone pillars. Black granite inserts are engraved with the Firefighter’s Prayer, EMT Prayer and the names of the company’s charter members from its foundation on April 9, 1948. Flowers near the memorial were donated by Pat Saxton.

Much of the monument except for the granite inserts was in place in May, Valvano said.

The company’s only two remaining charter members, Wellington “Laverne” Barber and Anthony Stugus, now have the opportunity to remember their friends and the work the company has done. The two gentlemen had more than 60 years of combined experience with the company.

Both Barber and Stugus say they continue to support the company they founded by attending fundraisers.

The total cost of the memorial was approximately $7,500, according to Valvano.
